A good sense of style doesn’t come overnight, and it goes the same for men and women. Style takes time and practice to cultivate. While women may seem more adept at grasping style, I’ve learned that even the least stylish man can learn how to come up with his own style. I can say that for myself as I’ve learned gone through years of missteps to finally know what I like and what I’m comfortable in – that’s what style is after all, what best suits us.

I’m a big fan of classic men’s fashion and what I’ve learned is that there isn’t a lot of color when it comes to men’s clothes and accessories. Not that it’s bad, vivid colors are more apt for women’s fashion. I think it’s safe to say that most men find it hard to pull off a bright turquoise shirt for a quiet afternoon lunch at your favourite restaurant. Men’s fashion mostly involves neutral colors, and the hardest to pull off is white. Everything from white jackets to white pants and white mens shoes, you don’t regularly find men walking around in these around the mall or at the office.

Another key element in men’s attire are men’s shoes, there doesn’t seem to be a lot of them but I’ve learned that men should be aware of these styles so they can get the proper shoes for the occasion that calls for it. The new design gave the shoe a wider opening for the foot to get in and out of. Bulchers are still very popular today, and while it can go with a suit, they are still more appropriate for sporty jackets and trousers. You can also pull off dress boots with a suit but do choose a style that’s sleek and has very little styling. Wear them only when it’s just too cold for plain old oxfords. Another good casual shoe I have in my shoe rack are loafers or slip-ons. These are perfect for casual attire such as jeans, chinos, button-down shirts and sport jackets. You can manage to pair off loafers with little or no embellishments for dressier attire. Remember, less styling makes for more versatile and dressier shoes. One thing I love about loafers is they are great for travelling. I wear mine around a lot and they are especially good when flying because they are easy to take off and slip back in the plane and when going through security checks.

You can get away with white with sneakers. White nike shoes, I think, are one of the best inventions. Comfortable, stylish, and pretty versatile when it comes to casual clothing, white nikes are a godsend when you’re just not up to dressing up. I’m not a big fan of white, being a particularly active person who can wear white for as long as ten minutes after which it turns into yellow, or red depending on what I’m eating. My wearing white tends to invite disaster, like spaghetti sauce suddenly dribbling down an immaculate white shirt during dinner. However, I do see the wisdom in white mens sandals – easy to pair off with any pair of shorts. I’d rather go for a black or brown pair, though. But  nice white pair is not only easy on the eyes, they’re pretty easy to match with anything you have. White mens boots, on the other hand, require greater effort. These are better paired off with matching trousers and jacket and really require a lot of confidence – something I still have yet to achieve.

Staid, boring, drab – these are just some of the words I hear when my girlfriend sees my collection of shoes. While shoes to a woman is a pair of dazzling, colourful, strappy shoes in everything from flats to impossibly high heels,  I see shoes as a pair of well-crafted, leather pieces that are meant to whisper style rather than shout it. Classic men’s fashion, is just that – classy. Of course, the same can be said of women’s fashion but ours tend to change very little over time. Maybe a little tapering here on the pant leg, a little shorter on the jacket hem, a slightly longer silhouette for the shoe but never anything as drastic as turquoise one moment and honeysuckle the next. The entire point of men’s wear is giving the male figure a smooth and elegant silhouette because we really need it. Elegance can be achieved in men’s fashion, from well-cut suits and plain button-down shirts to cotton shirts and other casual wear. Mens shoes fashion typically change very little, too. The only drastic change I’ve seen between my shoes and my father’s is how fast I run mine down.

Style is more of an ensemble thing rather than a single noticeable accessory. However, one of the more powerful pieces in an ensemble are the shoes. I can’t stress it enough, a great suit can be ruined by a bad pair of dress shoes. The first thing you ought to consider is quality. It doesn’t take a style guru to differentiate good quality from bad, if you have a hard time telling then best go for the popular or more expensive mens shoes brands. Weigh the shoe first, is it too heavy for you? Feel the leather, is it soft and supple? Comfort is usually directly related to price, the more comfortable the shoe, the pricier it is. I’ve learned that quality can be eye-catching even if you are a beginner when it comes to buying shoes. A beautiful pair of Italian leather shoes will tend to catch your eye, they are typically elegant and designed with classic lines rather than trendy styles. Invest in a pair of black leather shoes – these will best with most suits everything from blue to brown or black. I have lots of suits in shades of brown (tan, khaki, chocolate brown) because they’re a little less formal, so I own a few pairs of dark brown leather dress shoes to match these. If you’ve got suits in silk or tweed, dress shoes in shades of rich chestnut will look great with those.  As I’m very partial to brown shades I do tend to buy more shoes in this color as well. I’ve learned that chestnut-colored shoes are great with knit suits, the texture comes alive with the richness of the shoe color. Burgundy-colored shoes are great with black, brown, or tan. I’ve also bought dress shoes in oxblood or reddish brown and they match earth-colored suits rather well.

In this article I will outline some of the different mens shoes that are out there, my experiences with them and what they are used for. It is interesting to know that shoes are one of the items we wear almost every day, yet surprisingly people understand very little about choosing the pair that is right for them – for various occasions, be that for day to day wear, office wear or sports wear. This is not just some other boring mens shoes review that can be found on so many website but instead I will actually provide you with some useful information and hopefully put you into a position where you can buy the right shoes and be on your way – quite literally.

Perhaps the most popular among men who like to make a fashion statement are mens designer shoes. In my experience, looking back, the first thing that comes to mind when thinking about mens designers shoes is that they have a hefty price tag associated with them. My first consideration is always financial. Do I really need to spend this much money on a pair of shoes? That’s the con argument. So the first affordable pair of shoes that came along were purchased and no they weren’t again designer shoes.

Alternatively if you do not like going out to shops, which I personally don’t unless I know exactly what I am buying, you can always do the research online and browse through the 1000s of fashionable mens shoes out there. There are many, many mens online shoes shops around where you can browse for the ideal pair of shoes and then nip into the city to buy them. I much prefer shopping at home out of my chair. I have thought a lot about what could possibly be classified as mens casual shoes. Think about it. If you have a very well paid job as a top banking investor, you will be wearing very expensive, possibly designer shoes, pretty much the entire day and week. You will undoubtedly also be very busy and have minimal loafing time. On the rare occasions you do enjoy some time off, you will probably be out to dinner wearing a suit or other expensive clothing. I therefore found that even though I am not working, my “casual shoes” that I am wearing are actually leather oxford shoes or similar, what normal people wear to work on a day to day basis. As these are good quality shoes, they are comfortable as they were designed to be worn during a long working day. That means many hours compared to other casual shoes that are actually uncomfortable after an hour or two as they are designed for shorter periods of the day.

When I am in need for new casual shoes, I first work out exactly what I want to wear with them. For example, if I want to wear them at night, possibly with jeans, then I go for something that is somewhat warmer as the nights do get cold sometimes. I also make sure that I can easily drive a car in them and that they are comfortable for walking so I can take my girlfriend for a stroll before or after the restaurant and cinema or whatever we may be doing that evening. There is nothing worse than having attention on your feet and shoes when they should be on your loved one instead.

When I talk about dress shoes, I mean highly polished and shiny black or brown oxford shoes or similar. These are the shoes that I wear to black tie dinners and very formal parties and events. I sometimes see shoes to are so shiny they look like they had a coat of varnish. How does one achieve such a shine? I was looking at various military ceremonies the other day and noticed that they have the shiniest shoes out of everyone. Highly polished and pristine looking no matter what the weather is like or how much mud they had to walk through. There simply isn’t a spec of dust on them. These shoes are not called dress shoes in those kind of shops. They are referred to as parade shoes. Needless to say, they are very expensive to buy as they are very good quality. Some of these have been worn once or twice only and cost a fraction of the original price. These are the perfect dress shoes for men. They will require little to no polishing or upkeep. I do have to warn you, they are not mens comfortable dress shoes! There is no comfort involved here. They are designed to keep their shape and are only supposed to be worn for a couple hours a day, once a month. They are extremely stiff and hard, to make the clacking sounds as you walk, and therefore your feet will hurt if you wear them too long at a time. You cannot “break in” these dress/parade shoes like normal leather shoes. It is well worth the money and appearance though and the pain is nothing like a nice hot bath at night can’t handle.

When it comes to mens fashion shoes I personally think it is entirely down to each individual person what they think is good, bad and the ugly. I have seen many fashion trends over the years, each year being entirely different, and to be honest I personally take it more as a guideline of what is in this year and what is out rather than a “must have these shoes this year” as they are the fashion statement. Of course I like to be fashionable, as does pretty much everyone else but it has to be affordable too and in alignment with my taste and dressing style.

To find out what is in fashion, I tend to look at my girlfriends fashion magazines such as OK, Hello and so on. And lets face it, they can do it a lot better than us so why not use it as an inspiration and learn a thing or two. Top designer stores such as found in Major cities will also be very much up to date and act as a good source of information too. Staff tend to be helpful and often explain to me what is in and out this year. Again they work in the industry and so know what they are talking about.
